If you’re planning a visit to New York City between now and August 31, be sure to stop by the AKC Museum of the Dog to experience an extraordinary traveling exhibition: Honoring the Point: The Collection of Gwynne McDevitt.
Gwynne McDevitt was an incredible individual, she was a passionate art connoisseur, vivid art collector, and devoted dog lover. A true sportswoman, she bred Gordon Setters and become a handler showing them as well as participated in field trials with both English and Gordon Setters. Her love of art and collecting was influenced by her parents, Col. and Mrs. Edgar William Garbisch, who assembled one of the most significant folk art collections in the country, now housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. Gwynne surrounded herself with paintings she loved, once stating, “I look at them every day, I study them, and they give me great comfort.”
Her remarkable collection features works by renowned artists such as Thomas Blinks, George Earl, John Emms, Marguerite Kirmse, Charles Herman-Léon, Charles Olivier de Penne, Edmund Osthaus, Percival Rosseau, and Robert K. Abbett whom she commissioned 18 paintings of her beloved dogs and horses.
Don’t miss the chance to witness this breathtaking collection that celebrates the beauty of sporting dogs through the eyes of an extraordinary collector. This traveling exhibition was organized by the National Sporting Library & Museum (NSLM) in Middleburg, VA, and expertly curated by Claudia Pfeiffer, NSLM’s George L. Ohrstrom, Jr. Deputy Director and Head Curator.
